Pharmacovigilance in East Africa has experienced significant progress since 2010, with Tanzania leading the way.

Most countries in the region have established basic systems, although Burundi and South Sudan continue to lag behind. Efforts have focused on adverse event reporting and raising awareness, despite challenges such as under-reporting and limited resources.

Patient empowerment is essential, and individuals are encouraged to report side effects. Additionally, some health authorities are beginning to adopt artificial intelligence to enhance drug safety assessments.
